During my master’s degree in medical microbiology, I realized to what extent fundamental research on microbes is critical for generating new knowledge aimed at the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Antimicrobial resistance is an issue that I believe requires particularly urgent attention. To contribute to this field, I previously worked as a research assistant at the Pasteur Institute of Iran, using bioinformatics and genomics to study highly resistant hospital-acquired bacteria. Now, as a PhD student at UQ, jointly supervised by Andrew Letten and Jan Engelstädter, I am investigating the metabolic repertoire of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and how this affects their evolution and persistence. I love what I do!
